Separate HDD upgrade creates external drive
Vendor Other World Computing has announced two new RAM upgrades, intended explicitly for the 2010 Mac mini. The first of these is a $150, 4GB DDR3 module, which replaces one of Apple's default modules for a maximum 6GB of memory. This option is not available through Apple's customization path, OWC notes.
The second upgrade is an 8GB DDR3 kit, consisting of two 4GB modules. The kit is selling for $296, substantially less than the $500 Apple is charging for pre-installed memory with the same 1,066MHz rating. Apple has also re-engineered the Mini to make it easier into self-install new RAM.
OWC is further selling several hard drive upgrade kits which are meant for MacBooks, but can be used in the Mini. These start at $60, and provide up to 640GB of capacity. Each also includes five installation tools and an enclosure, which can be used to turn the original drive into an external model.
