Nintendo says no urgency for new Wii, dismisses Sony

Nintendo says Wii sales not a concern

At an analyst briefing at E3 on Wednesday, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said the Wii's sales are not concerning and he doesn't feel the need to replace the console anytime soon. The Wii's sales growth, despite slowing, is still ahead of competitors from Sony and Microsoft, he claimed.

"It is easy to talk about growth when you are working off of a very low base," Iwata said through an interpreter when prompted with a question regarding a jump in sales of Sony's PS3. On an absolute level, the president said, Nintendo is still "dramatically better" than its competitors and the level of sales is in Nintendo's favor, he continued.

At the same time, Iwata said the company would consider a share buyback, but only if a need arises.
