Droid still a third of all Android use worldwide

Motorola's nine-month-old Droid is still by far the most popular Android phone online, Chitika found in its latest online stats. The Droid was just over a third of all Android phones calling for mobile ads at 33.8 percent. HTC's Hero was a distant second at 9.9 percent, and the Droid Eris made up 8.2 percent of traffic.

Other, newer Android phones have yet to gain significant traction. Despite being available since January, the Nexus One is almost exactly tied with the days-old Evo 4G at about two percent each. The effect of repeated shortages on the Droid Incredible was also evident as it was just under 4.8 percent of Android's share.

The influence of the Droid line was also felt on the carrier balance. Even assuming all Nexus Ones were on T-Mobile, Verizon had almost exactly half of the Android market at 48 percent; T-Mobile was now only just ahead of Sprint at 23 percent versus 19 percent. AT&T's limitation to the Motorla Backflip as its only Android phone, its strong preference for the iPhone and its policies towards banning non-Market apps are likely to have contributed to the carrier getting just 1.1 percent of the Android sphere.

Motorola is likely to get even more share once the Droid 2 and Droid X launch on Verizon, possibly on July 19. The strong bias towards Verizon also creates sharp pressure on Google as any possible Verizon iPhone could skew the results as fewer customers overall might choose Android.
