iPhone 4 pre-orders generate privacy breaches

updated 09:40 am EDT, Wed June 16, 2010

AT&T customers see personal details of others

Yesterday's troublesome pre-order process for iPhone 4s was also beset by some serious privacy violations, according to a number of complaints. Some AT&T customers report that when they tried to log into their accounts on the carrier's website, they instead saw other people's information, including addresses, phone calls and bills. Only some of the most sensitive pieces of data -- call details, credit cards and social security numbers -- were kept hidden, AT&T admits.

The carrier adds that although it has not been able to replicate the problem, it is currently "looking into this matter." An anonymous source within the company alleges that problems may be related to "a major fraud update that went wrong;" this statement has yet to be backed up, either officially or by a second source.

The incident may only compound some of the public frustration over the iPhone 4 rollout. It also represents AT&T's second Apple-related privacy leak in roughly the space of a week, as the carrier recently let slip the identities of over 114,000 iPad 3G owners, including high-ranking government officials such as White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

C'mon Apple Legal, isn't this enough to warrant cutting the exclusive tie with AT&T ??

This must be some sort of breach of contract.. don'tcha think?

    Privacy breach!

Once somebody left a book outside my front door with the names, phone numbers and addresses of everyone in the city! And what's worse is everybody got one. Major breach of privacy.

Haven't heard much from these 'Yellow Pages' people lately but I am sure they learned their lesson...
