Apple delays some iPhone 4 accessories

updated 10:30 am EDT, Tue June 15, 2010

Dock, non-black bumpers only due July 2nd

In tandem with the beginning of iPhone 4 pre-orders, Apple has also begun taking pre-orders on first-party accessories for the device. Some important gear will not be ready for the June 24th launch event however; a new dock, priced at $29, is only expected to ship on July 2nd. The dock is listed as exclusively compatible with the iPhone 4.

A similar delay is affecting Apple's $29 bumpers, as only the black option will be available on the 24th. All other colors -- white, pink, orange, green and blue -- will ship on July 2nd. Customization appears to be an initial issue with the iPhone 4, as buyers will not even be able to get versions with white backs for the first few weeks.

    Please source or quantify

The basis for your claim of "the first few weeks" on white iPhones? Haven't seen a response from Apple or AT&T for this tidbit of information yet... is this purely speculative? If so, the article should say so, as it's very, VERY misleading if you don't have a basis for this information.

    Important Gear?

A dock is convenient but I wouldn't call it "important." I've been able to sync my iPhone quite well over the past couple years using the sync cable by itself. And I made a little stand out of a paper clip when I want to view something on the screen.

    I wonder

I wonder if I can take my dremel tool to my original iPhone Apple Bluetooth Headset extended dock for a second time to accommodate the iPhone 4... I'm running low on plastic in a couple spots.

    Re: Please source...

Well, you could follow the links (I know, it's so hard to click and read source material!).

Or you could just do the easy thing. Go to Apple's site and go to the pre-order process.

On the select a phone page, it reads:

"White iPhone currently unavailable for pre-order or in-store pickup"

Or are you going to take the leap that Apple is just not pre-ordering those, but want people to show up and stand in line on day 1 to buy them, since they're so special?

    Bumpers?

With all the talk of the 'more prone to breakage' glass previously, which led to the talk of Apple's "bumpers", I just assumed they came with the phone. But they're charging $30 for them? I guess Apple knows their market. If it has their logo on it, they can charge a pretty premium and still sucker people into buying it..

    White backs...

The phones have white backs, white fronts, and a white home button.

I just want a black bumper, no biggie, never use a dock i think they are better suited for A/V applications where you watch your photos/vids on a tv or such, charging you just plug in the cable and done.
