BlackBerry 9800 may be renamed the Torch

updated 06:00 pm EDT, Tue June 15, 2010

BlackBerry 9800 to be part of Torch series?

The upcoming BlackBerry 9800 handset may be renamed as the Torch, despite the earlier leaked Bold stamping on the handset. Unofficial tips hint that Torch would designate a new family for BlackBerry devices with slide out QWERTY keyboards. RIM has registered the Torch name in April, CrackBerry notes, so it is more than likely it will be used for at least one real product.

Some slider BlackBerry devices with the Torch branding are also already apparently being built in RIM's Guadalajara, Mexico plant. Whatever family it will be part of, the BlackBerry 9800 is expected to be the first device with BlackBerry 6 OS and a new WebKit browser. It will also support multi-touch and drop the controversial SurePress screen.
