Starbucks bringing free Wi-Fi to stores in July

Premium coffee chain Starbucks revealed that it will offer unlimited free Wi-Fi access in its company-operated US locations starting on July 1. Currently, Starbucks offers two free hours per day to registered customers at nearly 6,700 locations. The free access, provided by AT&T, won't require a Starbucks loyalty card.

At the same time, Starbucks announced some paid web content will be free to customers in the fall as well. Called the Starbucks Digital Network, the service will grant free access to paid sites that include the Wall Street Journal and exclusive content and free downloads from iTunes, The New York Times, Patch, USA Today, Yahoo and Zagat. there are no limits

at the other coffee shops in my area that offer free wifi. One is packed all the time, and the other is full of very quiet people all day long. It doesn't seem to have caused a problem. On the other hand, though, there is no college nearby.

    Day late...

Back in the old "toilet seat" iBook days StarBucks was thinking of rolling out WiFi at all stores for free. Day #1 they wanted free AirPort base station, by day #5 they wanted 5 to 10 iBooks per store. All were going to use a "VLAN" from their corporate 56kbps network. Security, schmurity. Apple pulled out from the deal (after settin g up StarBucks CEO with a complete home network with WiFi (Password: STBKSUX).
