WWDC mugging victim gets replacement iPad, word from Jobs

updated 01:20 pm EDT, Mon June 14, 2010

'Safe travels home,' exec says

Apple has reportedly given special treatment to one Chinese developer, who was attacked last week while attending WWDC. Known online as Stone, the developer works with Tencent, responsible for China's popular QQ messaging client. While riding a bus in San Francisco Stone was mugged, suffering injuries including a broken rib and marks on his face. An iPad brought with him was bent and cracked, although technically still functional.

The tablet was replaced for free at an Apple Store by a Genius worker, who is said to have felt sorry for Stone when he brought his iPad in for repair. The developer is later reported to have received personal e-mail from Apple CEO Steve Jobs, simply wishing him "safe travels home."

San Francisco has had recurring problems with theft of Apple hardware, likely owing to the city's cluster of tech companies, and the proximity of Apple in Cupertino. An assistant district attorney, Brian Buckelew, recently claimed that "probably half" of the robberies in the city involve iPhones.

    Excellent PR!

I remember the feeling years ago when I was in Lisbon, riding a public bus, and my wallet with $600 in it was pick-pocketed. Being in a foreign country made it all the worse, as it was all the money I had at the time.

This was an excellent PR caper for Apple and SJ. You can tell the man was genuinely pleased and relieved.

I love SJ's terse e-mails. Kind of in the tradition of haiku.

Anyone else been robbed in San Francisco?

I will not go back to an Apple event of any kind at Mascone. Doing so just paints a big red target on your back. It wasn't the first time but the last straw was having my entire suitcase stolen on the last day of Macworld 09. Tech toys, gifts for my kids and all my clothes gone. Not to mention a messed up rental car.

Unlike the guy in the story, I had to claim my theft with my insurance and didn't get any nice notes from SJ. I feel much more comfortable in NY... So, who else got robbed while at an Apple sponsored event?

    So

Should all the people being mugged for the iPads and iPhones also make sure they make it public, so Apple will send them free replacement gifts as well?

    Jobs probably...

sent some of his "Boys" to look after this poor guy. That'd be crazy lol, but this just goes to show how good a company Apple is, I mean would any other company give you a brand new replacement just because you SAID you got robbed? Nope!

    Great Idea!!!

@testudo, you should try it out. Be sure to also have the perps bash in your face a little bit and don't forget the broken rib.

Let me know if you need help; I'm sure some sympathetic types will give you what you're asking for. After all, it's all about making the world a better place, no?

    Thank you Steve...

This Chines developer is happy that Steve mailed him and he got a replacement iPad? I sure hope he is. Is this how we want to treat our visitors? Please stop mugging them and beating the s*** out of a foreigner. They go back home with bitter memories.

I understand bad people are bad everywhere but a visitor is important for the image of the nation. They may come from a poorer nation but they deserve respect. Unfortunately some of us feel that being rich and powerful gives us the right to bully these people. Be human and be humble. Remember the most powerful action by a powerful person is humility.

That's right! They should beat up and mug the citizens instead. Don't these muggers know how much tourism money is needed in San Francisco???

Maybe they should insist on passing laws in CA that require all thugs and neer-do-wells to check citizenship documentation before proceeding with a beat-down.

That's right. Apple is the only company to ever do such a thing. No one else would, we know that. I mean, I don't recall reading anything on MacNN about this ever being done except by Apple!

    That's terrible

That's so terrible. No where is safe in this world. Traveling to U.S. or anywhere else needs to do a bit of homework. Foreigner visitors do get mugged also when they are in China.
