Mad Catz to sell Rock Band 3 gear with MIDI hooks

Mad Catz unwrapped the final details of its whole instrument line for Rock Band 3. The headlining Wireless Keyboard Controller is now confirmed to not only handle 25 keys and two octaves of range but has MIDI support to work with computer audio editors and hardware like mixers. It can also double as a controller for the bass and regular guitars.

The keyboard will sell for itself for $80, but it can be had with the game for $130 and will have an optional stand for those who prefer to stand while they play.

In a twist with the introductions, Mad Catz will have a MIDI adapter; the MIDI Pro-Adapter kit converts real MIDI drums and keyboards into USB peripherals for the game. Standard buttons on the adapter also let players steer the menus of the game without needing a separate controller. The adapter will sell for $40.

Just one guitar is known on launch. A wireless replica of the Fender Mustang Pro use a large grid of buttons on the neck simulates a six-string guitar for slides, strumming and other more realistic moves in the game's Pro Mode. It too can work as a MIDI instrument and will sell by itself for $150.

Mad Catz has yet to update its own drums but will give players support for the Pro Mode through the Wireless Pro-Cymbals Expansion Kit; it can replicate the crash, hi-hat and ride cymbals. The pads are dampened with rubber to prevent overwhelming the game with noise but are also said responsive. Adding the cymbals costs $40.

All of the peripherals will come in versions for the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360. Every version should be ready in the fall and should be matched by updates to Mad Catz' regular guitar and drum kits.
