Apple in talks with 12 Volt Initiative for car audio

Group organizing promotion for car audio

Apple is reportedly in talks with the 12 Volt Initiative, a group that is organizing an industry-wide promotion for car audio. Members involved with the project claim they originally approached Apple over a year ago, however a shift in the iPod team temporarily interrupted the talks and prevented the company from participating in the promotion last year.

The iPod management team was very receptive to what we we’re doing,” said Steve Witt, chairman of the Initiative's governing board. “While they completely supported and encouraged us, they weren’t prepared to define any specific role they could play.”

Witt suggestions that Apple's head of automotive integration has engaged in fresh talks. The recent discussions are said to be promising, although Apple has yet to commit to participation in the upcoming event.

The initiative aims to unite manufacturers, distributors, retailers, and other associations to help bolster consumer awareness ahead of the holiday selling season. [via CEoutlook]

    A2DP?

So is this about making iPods support some kind of A2DP stereo Bluetooth standard protocol? That would certainly be a nice choice for car stereo integration.

    Competition Continues from Apple

That will put Microsoft's Sync in jeopardy. Apple is spreading to MS territory now.

    Flash only?

I guess if I were Apple I wouldn't take anybody serious that has a flash only homepage without any alternative...

are they sure that 12 Volt is enough? ;-)

    Competition?

Sync is a factory installed system that allows the vehicle's entertainment system to interface with devices. iPods and iPhones are among the many devices that work with the Sync system. If communication protocols between vehicles and devices are standardized, this stands to benefit Ford and Sync as much as anyone else.

While I am interested to see Apple's take on Sync, this isn't it.
