Garmin updates Astro dog tracking with DC 40

Garmin on Friday announced the upcoming release of its DC 40 tracking collar that will replace the DC 30 in its Astro GPS Dog Tracking System. Meant for helping to find a hunting dog that went to fetch downed game, the new collar is more durable and convenient. The GPS puck is integrated into the main housing as opposed to being on top of the collar as in the DC 30.

The DC 40 is compatible with the majority of standard e-collar receivers, doing away with the need to put two collars on a dog. The charging port is now also less prone to collect mud, and the LED charging light will flash while charging and turn solid when charged.

Also new is Collar Lock, a PIN-protected way to keep the whereabouts of a hunting dog relegated to a single GPS. This could be used during hunting competitions to ensure dogs are only tracked by GPS when they become lost.

Together with the Astro 220 receiver, the DC 40 will track a hunting dog up to seven miles and tell hunters whether he's running, pointing or treeing.

The system can track up to 10 dogs, though as many collars are required. It can send GPS updates every 5, 10, 30 or 120 seconds. The system is waterproof.

Prices or release dates for the new DC 40 collar have not been released, but the current system with the DC 30 collar lists for $600. The DC 30 on its own costs $200.
