iBooks begins arriving on iOS 4 devices

E-book portal previously limited to iPad

As promised, Apple has begun rolling out a new version of its iBooks app specifically designed for devices running the latest iOS 4 beta. Many developers have reportedly received notifications to download the e-book utility from the desktop versions of iTunes.

Early reports suggest iBooks will run on the iPhone 3GS and latest-generation iPod touch, however the app does not yet support the iPhone 3G. It is unclear if the incompatibility will extend to the final release, or if it is merely a shortcoming of the beta version.

Apple recently disclosed plans surrounding an upcoming iBooks update. The revision will bring support for PDF files, loaded into a separate bookshelf, along with bookmarks and notes functionality. The company has yet to confirm if the full range of new features will be supported on the iPad and iPhone variants. [via Engadget]
