Boxee Box delayed to November

Boxee Box moved months back

Boxee tonight told customers that it was delaying the Boxee Box to November. It had planned to ship the hub by the end of the spring but discovered that it was "overly ambitious." Company founder Avner Ronen stressed that the timeframe was a firm one set by D-Link and that it would lead to a greater amount of polish.

"Our vision is to make the Boxee experience on a set top box as good as (and where we can, better than) the one you already know on a PC," Ronen said. "The goal is to play HD videos from the web or a local network in 1080p and use hardware acceleration whenever possible. And to provide a TV browser experience that can handle almost everything you throw at it, including Flash 10.1. Not to mention making all this happen for an affordable price and on a quiet device that will not feel obsolete 12 months after you buy it."

The Boxee Box was conceived as an open, platform-independent gateway to audio and video that could get to normally web-only video as easily as locally stored content. It won't have significant local storage of its own but will have its own app platform and has a unique controller, the Box Remote, with a QWERTY keyboard on its reverse side.

"It had planned to ship the phone by the end of the spring"... Phone? I think the author has been working for too long today.

I just want the box... I don't care about the function, I just think the box and logo are the coolest thing since the Next (or NeXT) box, or maybe the Wii. It won't fit on my stack of components, but neither does the Xbox, the PS3, the ATV, the cable box... geez, the top rack of my setup is looking like my grandma's curio cabinet.

And look! Another dedicated remote! I have another cabinet just for those.

Waiting like all the others do for...

All the cell phone manufacturers have been doing their damnedest to copy Apple since the iPhone. Microsoft has been doing it for an eternity with Windows. Now that Apple has basically created the tablet market, everyone is scrambling to copy the iPad. I betcha Boxee is just waiting for Apple to release a new Apple TV based on iOS so they'll know how to copy it.

That box (not phone) design is too clever by half.
