Appsfire pulls app after waiting for update approval

updated 06:10 pm EDT, Thu June 10, 2010

Developers waited 2 months for green light

iPhone developer Appsfire has pulled its self-titled app from iTunes following frustrations with Apple's approval process. The original title, which helped users find other popular iPhone apps, was approved and listed last August. The company has since readied a v2.0 update, which has allegedly been awaiting approval for two months.

Appsfire founder Ouriel Ohayon has criticized Apple for failing to return phone calls to help explain the delay. Ohayon further accuses the company of intentionally delaying the process so it can keep control over the app discovery process.

"Was your intent to shut us down by playing the waiting game until the legal team had caught up? The problem remains, in fact we don’t even know what the problem might be since you are not talking to us,” Ohayon wrote.

Although several reports suggest Apple has been improving communication with developers, many of the same complaints continue to arise. Some developers suggest the SDK terms are vague and enforced arbitrarily, with certain apps left for long periods of time without an approval or rejection.

Steve Jobs, speaking at the recent D8 conference, defended the process by citing a quick turnaround time for 95 percent of apps, with most of the rejections based on bugs or violation of SDK terms. Without mentioning any specific cases, the CEO claimed that many developers are lying about circumstances surrounding app rejections. [via TechCrunch]

So basically, it was reproducing existing features

Apps fire was basically repackaging the home screen, search and the app store rating system. Why would they expect Apple to approve it?

Thanks for the post although we would prefer to avoid this kind of advertising and spend our time making a great product

Aristotles> this is wrong. We are an Apple affiliate with official access to the App Store data that we "repackage" in no different way than then tens of apps, Apple has approved and continues to approve in the App store solving or trying to solve App discovery.

And this is not the problem> if this is the problem they should simply reject it, instead of leaving a whole company waiting for a probable verdict.

    repackaging

And what is wrong with repackaging? You make it sound like, if Apple has something, there is no need to offer an alternative because Apple's way must be the best way.

And yet, BTW, Apple has allowed other browsers on the iPhone, even though they all just repackage Safari. Let alone a bunch of other apps that do the same things, just differently.

    Apple does things differently

Because Apple and Steve Jobs are really looking out solely for themselves, I feel I have to support the competing product. I finally bit the bullet and bought a Sprint-HTC Evo phone last week. It was a pretty hard thing to decide but I'm not looking back. Yes, I think Apple makes a superior product. Yes, I'm going to miss out on the iphone 4, yes I'm going to miss my iTeleport. BUT, I want to support a more open standard-Android. Flash is working great on my new phone and I can finally go to my banking site which uses flash. I can do so much more with this phone and hopefully, Google will be better supporting programs like Appsfire.

I love my iPhone but am tired of being TOLD what I can do and cannot do with my phone. I want a platform that supports choices and that includes any developer creating any program they want.
