Droid sales going "extremely well," facing shortages

updated 06:30 pm EDT, Wed June 9, 2010

Motorola to add devices with front-facing cameras

Motorola's Droid smartphone has reportedly maintained strong demand, despite being upstaged by several newer Android offerings on the same network. Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha, speaking at an Executives Club event, suggested the company is facing widespread shortages for the Droid.

"(Droid) sales are going extremely well," Jha said. "If I could build more I'd sell more."

The executive also disclosed plans to introduce two to four handsets with front-facing cameras before the end of the year. The feature is expected to help Motorola compete with the latest high-end smartphones, such as the iPhone 4 and Evo 4G, which integrate dual cameras for mobile video conferencing.

Verizon has also experienced shortages of HTC's Droid Incredible handset, following limited LCD supplies from Samsung. The Evo 4G has shown similar sales performances, selling out across many Sprint outlets in the US.

A recent report suggests Apple has maintained a 28 percent market share, slightly behind RIM, while Android has continued to grow to reach nine percent of US smartphone usage. [via Reuters]
