Apple seeds iOS 4 gold master to developers

updated 10:20 pm EDT, Mon June 7, 2010

Public release scheduled for end of June

Apple has released the iOS 4 gold master to developers, several weeks ahead of the formal iPhone 4 introduction. The operating system, formerly referred to as the iPhone OS, will bring a variety of new features to the company's range of mobile devices.

The update will allow users to take advantage of multitasking, a unified inbox, e-mail threading, and folders for app organization. iBooks and iMovie will also arrive on the iPhone platform, along with Bing as a search option.

The formal iOS release is scheduled for June 21, with downloads to be available for any iPhone and iPod touch except for first-generation models.

Release is exactly two weeks away. That's not quite "several"

    Waiting for Cisco to Complain/Sue

Given that iOS is, well, pretty much exactly the same name as IOS - Cisco's proprietary embedded operating system for its routers, etc. - I'm a little confused by Apple naming choice. I understand that anyone who knows that IOS exists (i.e. geek) isn't likely to be confused between the two, but why risk the fight? ...unless of course Apple and Cisco have already discussed the matter - because it's not like Steve wouldn't go ahead and use the name even if Cisco told him they'd sue ;)

Who would get the two confused? I mean, really. Cisco's is spelled with a capital 'I', while Apple has the obligatory (and apparently trade-marked) little 'i'.
