iPhone 4 surfaces at FCC with five-band 3G for NTT DoCoMo

Apple hints at wider iPhone launch at FCC

In sync with the iPhone 4 unveiling itself, Apple has posted an FCC filing for the hardware that hints at possible international expansion. The phone not only has the requisite 850MHz/1,900MHz North American and 900MHz/2,100MHz international bands but also an 800MHz band. It isn't listed in Apple's official specs but would let the phone work on Japan's NTT DoCoMo, implying a possible expansion beyond SoftBank.

Notably absent is the 1,700MHz band, which would be necessary for 3G on T-Mobile in the US and Wind Mobile in Canada.

The phone isn't the only five-band device due this year as the Nokia N8 will achieve the same feat later in the summer. Nokia's device drops the extra Japanese band in favor of T-Mobile bands.

Apple's decision to pass on T-Mobile isn't expected, as the carrier is the fourth largest in the US where CDMA providers like Sprint and Verizon are still larger. It also confirms that Apple is using a much more flexible chipset beyond just the addition of 5.8Mbps upload speeds.

The iPhone 3GS already works on NTT DoCoMo

When I was over in Japan earlier in April/May, I was roaming with my Canadian iPhone on NTT DoCoMo and I even enabled data roaming and I had *GASP* 3G data.
