Win 7 overtakes XP, Mac gets significant share
The launch of Steam on the Mac has seen the Mac surge to 8.9 percent of the audience in less than a month, Valve's May hardware survey said. The platform was only available from May 12 but has already overtaken Windows Vista 64-bit in share. Most of the Mac share was using a 64-bit version of Snow Leopard.
For Windows users, the month represented their own milestone as it marked the first month when Windows 7 overtook XP. The combined share of the newer OS topped 35.9 percent, just enough to oust Windows XP at 33.4 percent. Microsoft's updated OS nonetheless saw its share decline slightly on its own and hinted that a small part of Windows players were Mac OS X owners giving up Boot Camp.
Valve didn't say which Macs and Windows PCs were being used, but the vast majority were using Intel processors and ATI Radeon 4800 or 5800 graphics.
