Mac mini drought hints at model updates

updated 03:35 pm EDT, Thu June 3, 2010

Bulk shipments cut off by Apple

The Mac mini appears to be on the verge of receiving a much-needed update, evidence suggests. A number of suppliers are indicating shipping delays or a complete absence of stock, a common occurrence in the weeks before Apple releases new hardware. One buyer for a higher educational institution says that in placing a bulk order for Minis two weeks ago, he specified to an Apple salesman that the computers would be needed by June 1st. While the salesman assured him at the time that this would not be an issue, the shipping date was last week moved to June 14th.

"Every time this has happened in years past, it means that the item we ordered would be revised," the source says.

A consultant buying for a different organization says that when recently trying to secure a collection of higher-end Minis, his supplier indicated that the distributor had none left, and that Apple had no estimate on when new shipments might come in. A third person trying to buy Minis directly from Apple says he was told by contacts in the company to only order what he needed "for the next few weeks."

Calls to several resellers have been met with claims that orders will not be fulfilled until next week at the earliest. Next Monday marks the beginning of WWDC, when Apple is expected to announce a new iPhone, and possibly several computer refreshes. The Mini could potentially be upgraded with more RAM and storage, faster processors and a new graphics chip. It is also thought that the computer might swap its DVI port for an HDMI connection, a potential boon for people wanting a Mac as a media center PC.

    ....anything graphics wise...

...to solve the dual link display adapter distortion on these & macbook pros would seem an obviously urgent priority:

Pro users have had to deal with patently visible 30" display distortion (in my own case going on well over a year now) - how Apple can leave their professional market without a decent portable large screen external option for so long is hard to fathom...?

    I hope so

I've become a reluctant mac mini afficianado.

I held out with my Power Mac G4 sawtooth for many years and upgrades, hoping Apple would someday get back into the upgradeable tower business. I'm not counting the $2499 mac pro's...since they start in absurdville and go up from there.

Even the current mac mini, could officially go to 8GB of ram, and you can add a SSD drive, and it was snappy.

But if they are about to refresh, even better.

    much-needed? hardly

The current mini is a great machine... although it's the slowest Mac, it holds its own with other offerings in the same price range once you consider the size and overall value (although I'm not a fan of the new ports, including displayport... too easily jiggled/disconnected).

The mini is the Mac of the future... don't be surprised to see Apple abandoning it's towers altogether very soon. It's the direction they're going, like it or not. The tower will get smaller soon, and it will be a choice of mid-size or mini... both will have limitations that drive users crazy, but will have limited impact on function or sales. Apple is a consumer-oriented corporation, and the tower is a relic of the past in Jobs' eyes. It's a "truck,"... make that a Hummer, and Apple will abandon it soon in favor of a crossover.
