AMD in no rush to get into tablets

AMD says iPad doesn't create tablet market

AMD senior VP Rick Bergman today said at Computex that his company wouldn't get into tablets in the near future. As the market is so far limited to one company, Apple, no pressure exists for AMD to get into an ecosystem that doesn't really exist. The semiconductor company is still gauging the market and is waiting for demand to show up before becoming involved.

There are no plans to get into smartphones or other non-computer home electronics, Bergman said, referencing Intel's pushes into the area with chips shipping this year and in 2011.

Instead, the Athlon producer is turning most of its attention to netbooks, where it sees more growth in the short term. Most of its hopes are pinned on Bobcat, a netbook-oriented chip due in 2011 that would merge the graphics and processor into the same core. The design is likely to be too power-hungry for a tablet but, through ATI's experience with graphics, should be faster in many tasks than an equivalent Intel Atom processor.
