Iomega eGo gets speed and Mac updates

Iomega today revamped its eGo desktop and eGo portable drives to modernize their features. The desktop and portable drives both now have USB 3.0 versions that theoretically offer 10 times more bandwidth. These come in respective capacities of 500GB ($130) for the notebook drive and 1TB/2TB ($150/$230) for desktop models.

The portable drives have also been given more specialized versions: the Compact Editions use USB 2.0 but are smaller still than the earlier generation. A Mac edition of the BlackBelt drive gives users dual FireWire 800 ports, a FireWire 800-to-400 adapter, and the drive's signature outer band to help survive drops of up to seven feet. Compact Editions come in capacities of 320GB to 1TB at prices of $95 to $200, where the BlackBelt Mac Edition has only a 1TB, $230 model.

One more drive also caters to Macs. The Mac Edition eGo desktop drive has the same port options as the BlackBelt but has larger capacities of 1TB and 2TB at prices of $160 and $250 each.

All of the drives should be ready today with the exception of the BlackBelt Mac Edition, which arrives later this month in Apple stores.
