Sony to show Pellix cameras in September?

Sony will unveil two models of a new type of digital cameras at the Photokina show in September, says one rumor. The design is dubbed Pellix, and includes both a semitransparent and fixed mirror, according to SonyAlpahRumors. The two new Sony cameras, A55 and A33, will use the same APS-C sized sensor as the NEX-3 and NEX-5.

The benefits of the Pellix design include better video, as they will have a faster contrast autofocus capability than current DSLRs that can shoot HD videos. It promises to be the fastest autofocus on a video-capable DSLR camera.

Because of the fixed mirror, the images should also be sharper, and its operation quieter, while photos can be taken at faster speeds, up to 10FPS. An unnamed source says the cameras will have the ability to record in 24Mbps AVCHD format.

A con of the design includes losing an estimated 1/3 of exposure value, as the incoming light needs to be split into two parts, with one going to the phase detection sensor and another to the main image sensor.

The A55 will have the ability to shoot 1080p videos while the A33 will record 720p videos. The devices should also be cheaper than the current lineup of DSLR cameras.

Canon has offered Pellix cameras in the past, but they were film-based.
