HP rolls 30-inch LCD with one billion colors

HP ZR30w brings S-IPS to 30-inch LCDs

HP tackled the very top of the LCD market today through the ZR30w. The 30-inch screen is one of the few and HP's first to get an S-IPS panel that gives it very high color accuracy for photo and video pros. Over one billion colors are visible, and it covers the entire sRGB color space as well as 99 percent of Adobe RGB.

The screen is a rare return to a 16:10 aspect ratio and puts out the same 2560x1600 resolution as some earlier displays. It musters a relatively modest 3,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio but has both DisplayPort and DVI inputs as well as a four-port USB hub.

HP ships the ZR30w today for $1,299.

Following behind the larger screen are two budget Compaq-branded screens. With 18.5-inch and 20-inch displays using lower-color TN panels, the S1922 and S2021 are geared to much simpler tasks. Both have 5ms pixel response times and use only VGA for input; differences come with the resolution: the S1922 stops at 1366x768 where the S2021 scales up to 1600x900. They should be available later today for respective prices of $125 and $140.

    Is it really S-IPS?

HP's own specs say this is a TFT, not a S-IPS display:

Either they updated an old model and failed to update the specs, or it's not really IPS. The overall specs are not that impressive, and I have trouble believing they can really deliver IPS @30'' for this price, at least not and still have it compare favorably to the display in the iMac 27.

Buyer Beware; make sure you have a good return policy.
