Apple enables Places geotagging in latest iPhone OS 4 beta

updated 09:50 pm EDT, Mon May 31, 2010

Users can view photos arranged on a map

The latest iPhone OS 4 beta reportedly enables geotagging functionality in the mobile version of iPhoto Places. The feature builds upon existing capabilities, allowing users to view picture locations without leaving the iPhone interface to sync the content with a desktop program.

Several screenshots posted by AppleInsider show a Places tab in the Photos app that presents pins for each group of photos captured at various locations on a map. Users can locate individual images or groups of photos associated with each map point.

Other iPhone OS beta versions have also integrated separate tabs for Events and Faces, which offer the same functionality as the current iPad OS. The options should allow users to view groups of photos by date or people.

Apple has yet to confirm if the Places functionality will be included in the public release.
