Review: Powermat wireless charger case for iPhone

updated 12:15 pm EDT, Sat May 29, 2010

Powermat for iPhone tested

The Powermat Wireless Charging System for iPhone is a unique offering that give iPhone users both a wireless charging system as well as a protective case for their phone. Cable-free power sounds great in theory, but as most iPhone users either already have a case don't want one, how useful could this device really be? Read our review to find out.

    Useless

    Who could possibly make this statement with a straight face? In what universe does a bulky, thick, heavy, impractical case (blocks the dock connector and instead replaces it with a micro USB cord), which adds both substantial "weight and girth", gain any value over a considerably less expensive iPhone dock?

    Both require a power cord to the base station -- not pictured here, for obvious misleading reasons; both require a corded connection to a host computer when you want to sync -- except the dock can do that with one cord, where this silly product requires two.

    a) iPhone -> 30-pin Dock -> USB - > Computer
    or
    b) iPhone -> 30-pin Dock -> USB -> AC Adapter
    or
    c) iPhone -> Fat Bulky PowerMat case -> Fat Bulky Charging Pad -> AC Adapter & Cord (no docking)
    or
    d) iPhone -> Fat Bulky PowerMat case -> Fat Bulky Charging Pad -> AC Adapter & Cord *and* USB -> Computer

    May I please have two tractor wheels and tires for my Porsche 911? I don't need them, but I like to complicate my beautiful machines with unnecessary and useless items.
