Apple files for trademark on WebKit rendering engine

updated 04:45 pm EDT, Thu May 27, 2010

Tech supports several browsers

Apple has filed for a trademark on WebKit, the engine at the heart of Safari, documents show. While an open-source project, Apple is the creator and primary developer of the engine, which handles the critical task of page rendering. The technology has been adapted for use in several other platforms, including Google's Chrome and Android browsers, and HP/Palm's WebOS.

Apple's reasons for wanting to trademark WebKit are unknown, though they should not affect the use of the technology in non-Apple products. Approval may, however have an impact on what other companies can call their rendering engines. They may choose to associate engines with WebKit's predecessor, KHTML, or to create their own forks in the codebase.

    Safari

What a piece of s*** browser. Does anyone still use Safari?? Really? Apple should just scrap it and use someone else's modern browser.

    trademarks are for names

It's just the name "WebKit" that would be trademarked.

Many pieces of open source software have trademarked names... this allows the owners to protect what can use the name.

See, for example, "Mozilla", "Firefox", "Thunderbird", "Jabber" ...

    "Does anyone still use Safari?"

Yes, millions of people do, every day. It's fast, secure, and just plain works. But the topic here was WebKit, which is used by almost every browser developer, mobile web developer, etc.

Sure, you are just a troll. So I shouldn't feed you. But these are just a a few facts to gnaw on.

Really? Every browser developer uses webkit? Wow, who knew. And here I thought Firefox, IE, and Opera all had their own engines...

Or do we just count ALL the different 'browsers', and ignore whether they are 'popular' or not.

    Incorrect

Apple is the creator and primary developer of the engine,

Apple isn't the creator of 'WebKit'. They took KDE's web engine from Konqueror and went from there.
