Barnes and Noble provides new iPad reading option

Barnes & Noble fulfilled its plans on Thursday and launched the BN eReader for iPad (free, App Store). The large-scale reader syncs books from across any device using Barnes & Noble's store, including the Nook, and supports the LendMe feature to let friends "borrow" a book for two weeks. The extra size also brings highlighting and notes for the first time as well as a landscape-oriented list view that shows the details of a book before the reader jumps in.

The app is free and arrives just as Barnes & Noble is giving away books for the next four weeks. New accounts also get three public domain books as well as samplers of some bestsellers. Not all features will migrate to other readers, but the bookstore does promise that highlights and notes will sync with the iPhone and iPod touch in a summer update.
