LaCie Rugged Safe drive adds encryption, fingerprint scanner

updated 05:50 pm EDT, Tue May 25, 2010

128-bit AES encryption in capacities up to 500GB

LaCie has expanded its line of external storage products with the Rugged Safe, an external drive designed to protect data. Contents of the drive are secured using 128-bit AES hardware encryption, while a fingerprint scanner has been integrated directly onto the top of the housing for additional biometric authentication.

The fingerprint scanner can be configured to enable access for up to ten users. Once configured, the system works on Macs or PCs without requiring any software installation. Users can connect the drive via FireWire 800, USB 2.0, or FireWire 400 with an adapter cable. Power is drawn from FireWire or USB, although a dedicated port is also available if needed.

LaCie has maintained the same shock-resistant design common to the company's other Rugged drives. A rubber bumper surrounds the housing, while the drive is mounted on four independent suspensions for further protection.

The Rugged Safe is now available with a 500GB HDD for a suggested retail price of $190. Customers can also choose a 1TB option for $300.
