Android 2.2 reaches some Nexus Ones early

updated 11:00 am EDT, Sat May 22, 2010

Froyo already hitting Nexus One units

Google gave some Nexus One owners an early treat overnight by rolling out Android 2.2. Although promised only in the next few weeks, a handful of reports show it's reaching some devices. Google has already confirmed to TechCrunch that a gradual rollout is starting and implied that all Nexus Ones should have 2.2 in a few weeks.

Not much has been tested in the early stages, but the major speed improvement has already been seen. As expected, search now has different categories for apps, contacts and the web. YouTube's high-quality mode for Wi-Fi use is in evidence and behaves much like the feature on the HTC Evo 4G, albeit only on Wi-Fi.

Other phones will get Android 2.2 updates in the future, including all 2010 HTC phones; the Motorola Droid and Milestone are expected to be some of the earliest and may get it in the next several weeks.
