Netflix says HTML5 not ready for protected media

Netflix Cloud Architect Adrian Cockcroft on Thursday said Netflix was working on building HTML5 into its service. The newer web technology is primarily being used for the interface ad would make drag-and-drop or visual transitions. It would mostly be used for set-top boxes and features built into TVs.

The engineer was quick to defuse early speculation that this meant using HTML5 video in place of Microsoft's Silverlight plugin. HTML5's core video spec doesn't currently include a real copy protection system, Cockcroft said. Netflix has an iPad app today but isn't concerned about piracy as the nature of the app prevents viewers from easily ripping the video stream.
