HP 'Dick Tracy' watch puts maps on US army wrists

HP said late Wednesday that it was making a watch for the US military based on its flexible display technology. The watch, nicknamed the Dick Tracy watch, would show maps and other info to infantry and others in the field. As it will be made of bendable plastic, it should be much tougher and will draw so little power that it can run on solar cells printed on to the surface.

The plastic uses an extremely thin, metal-coated plastic printed with transistors.

Many of the details, such as how it would get an Internet connection or what OS would power it, weren't mentioned. HP told CNN it would have a prototype of the watch in about a year. Previously, it had already said that flexible plastic screens could scale to larger sizes and may be used in e-readers and notebooks.
