Intel to lift LCD size limits for dual-core netbooks?

updated 11:45 am EDT, Wed May 19, 2010

Atom CPUs will be permitted in larger devices

Intel is allegedly set to lift its LCD size restrictions that have prohibited manufacturers from building large netbooks based on Atom CPUs. The company previously placed a cap of 10.2-inches for panels used in Atom devices, in an attempt to avoid cannibalization of the notebook market.

Netbooks utilizing the dual-core N550 will be permitted to integrate larger screens, such as 11.6- or 12.1-inch LCDs, according to a DigiTimes report. Devices are expected to offer 1GB of DDR3 memory, with either a 32GB SSD or 250GB hard drive.

Reports suggest the N550 will help bring netbook prices up to a range between $350 to $400, an increase over the current N455 and N475 offerings which average between $250 and $350.
