HP Q2 2010 behind Apple's curve

HP showed some hints of slower growth this evening in its results for the spring quarter. The company's PC shipments were up 20 percent year-over-year and were high enough for HP to keep its top spot in the computer market but were a noticeable slowdown from this winter, when the PCs delivered were up 26 percent. Most of the revenue increase came unexpectedly from desktops, which earned 27 percent more where revenue from notebooks only grew 17 percent.

The company's profit grew healthily at 28 percent but owed the most to servers and software. HP's results were dampened by the $1.2 billion associated with buying Palm but won't include the smartphone designer's revenue until the takeover is finished.

HP touted the quarter as "strong" overall but didn't explain the changes in growth. The shift towards desktops may have been the result of an aging notebook lineup, which only got a major revision this month. Netbooks have also usually curbed HP's revenue through their tight profit margins and low starting prices.

The figure could have HP trailing slightly behind Apple based on early estimates, which put Mac sales growing by up to 23 percent this quarter. Predictions could also be cautious as the effect of new MacBooks and MacBook Pros won't have been fully measured until the end of June, when Apple wraps up its own spring quarter.
