Intel sees dual-core Atom boosting netbook prices

Intel dual-core Atom to raise netbook prices

Intel plans to launch its next-generation dual-core Atom processor for netbooks, the N550, this summer, and new information suggests it will bring up notebook prices. Current Atom 1.6GHz N455- or 1.83GHz N475-based netbooks are projected to cost between $250 and $350 in the near future; in comparison, the N550 with 1GB of DDR3 RAM, larger 20-32GB SSDs or a 250GB hard drive will bring up suggested notebook prices to about $350 and $400.

Part of the increase will come through minor specs boosts, as existing netbooks have between 512MB and 1GB of RAM as well as either 16 to 32GB SSD drives or 160 to 250GB hard drives. They usually run Windows but are known to use Linux at the very low end.

The N550 should have a 1.5GHz clock speed and 1MB of cache, but use just 8.5W of power at its thermal peak, making it only slightly more battery-hungry than single-core Atom hardware. It will power typical netbooks with screen sizes up to 10.2 inches. [via Fudzilla]
