Wii Vitality Sensor may get launch at May 17 event

updated 12:00 pm EDT, Sun May 16, 2010

AHA and Nintendo team on special event

Nintendo today hinted at plans for the Wii Vitality Sensor with word of a joint announcement with the American Heart Association. The two plan to hold a special event tomorrow, May 17th, that will include "top executives" from both companies at New York City's Le Parker Meridien. Few clues have surfaced other than the nature of the two companies and an emphasis on Nintendo's experiences with the Wii.

The Vitality Sensor was shown almost a year ago at E3 and measures a gamer's pulse from a finger. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata suggested at the time that it could be used for games where relaxing would be the goal, but a collaboration with the AHA implies a more practical game designed to improve health. Titles such as Wii Fit and EA Sports Active have often been used to promote exercise.
