Sprint WiMAX now available in Boston

Sprint has quietly launched its 4G WiMAX network in Boston, BGR discovered on Friday. The new network was automatically found using an Overdrive router. Boston is one of the cities due for a 4G launch in 2010, and it's likely Sprint is putting finishing touches on the new data network's functionality before officially launching it.

WiMAX theoretically allows peak 12Mbps download speeds, though real-world testing from Sprint reveals transfers in the 2-4Mbps range. The carrier says its performance is twice as fast as practical 3G speeds. Pricing for a monthly plan starts at $60.
