Track the IP address of stolen Macs
Digital Point has launched Phone Home, a new tracking-software that allows users to pinpoint the location of stolen or lost Macs. The app is designed to run unnoticed in the background and is capable of providing information on lost Macs such as the physical location within a few miles, and the IP address that is currently in use. In times that the computer is stolen, users can subpoena the internet service provider to find out what person owns the IP address that the computer is currently connected to.
In addition to the IP address, the program is also capable of taking a picture if the computer has a built-in webcam. The picture is stored on the website and can be used to identify the thief or simply find out if anyone else is accessing the computer. The app is designed to obtain this information whenever the network configuration changes and a new IP address is obtained. When it comes to storing data, the website will hold onto IP addresses the computer has used for up to a year, while pictures are only stored for a month.
Phone Home requires Mac OS X 10.4 or higher and is available as a free download from the company’s website. When running the free version the app will collect all data and keep historical records, while allowing users to see a map displaying the general location of the computer. However, in order to access more detailed info such as the IP address or images, users will need to upgrade to a Premium membership on the website.
