Android to tie into GM's OnStar system

updated 05:10 pm EDT, Wed May 12, 2010

OnStar to announce Android partnership next week?

The rumor that GM is partnering with Google to bring Android mobile OS integration is expected to become official soon, as a new leak today has claimed that the the mobile OS will be used to control unspecified features through a smartphone rather than the car itself. OnStar President J. Christopher Preuss fueled the speculation with word of significant news next week through the company's Facebook page.

GM is increasingly looking to appeal to younger buyers with its products, and one way it aims to do so is by introducing new technology meant to challenge Ford's Sync features. Currently, OnStar can provide navigation directions, relay calls, track and shutdown stolen vehicles and help look up points of interest, but often relies on a live operator.

If OnStar does make such an announcement next week, it will be much sooner than the originally expected 2011 rollout of any new features.
