Intel "serious" about tablets, touts dual-core Atom

Intel's Eden hints at dual-core x86 tablets

Intel at its Investor Meeting on Tuesday pledged itself to supporting Atom-based, touch-only tablets in the future. Client VP Mooly Eden promised that the first true Intel-based tablets would appear at the Computex expo in early June and held up what appeared to be a reference tablet design. He was adamant that Intel was committed to the category largely dominated today by the ARM-based iPad.

"People ask me, are you serious about trying to participate in the tablet market? The answer is yes," Eden said.

He added that future x86-running tablets could also be substantially faster as they could support the new dual-core Atom N500 destined for netbooks. The chip would provide a major speed increase for operating systems that support multitasking, such as Windows 7.

Intel has had a troubled relationship with tablets even this year as its Atom processors are only now becoming power-efficient enough to drive the thin devices. The mobile Internet device (MID) and UMPC categories have largely failed to take off due to the bulky designs and short battery lives used by older Atom chips. HP may have even killed its Windows 7 slate as its Atom N270's 5 hours of battery life and possibly sluggish performance have left it fighting to keep up with the 10-hour and overall more responsive Apple iPad.

Intel expects the tablet market to grow rapidly and to reach 50 to 60 million units per year within the next few years, but most of the tablets shipping in 2010 are believed to be using ARM rather than Atom. HP may have even defected as the webOS-based Hurricane tablet could be the Windows slate's replacement. [via CNET]

    It's the OS, too.

It's a lot more than hardware specs. Ask Apple about it.
They've worked hard at mobile device power efficiency for the past 10 years through every iPod generation. That's not even mentioning the PowerBooks and MacBook Pros.

Love that guy's hat. Is it still 1995?
All he needs is a goatee to complete the ultimate dweeb picture.

    Serious, eh?

I wouldn't take serious any string of words coming from a guy wearing that hat. Who let him out of the house looking that way? Unless he is French, he has no excuse. Leave the berets to Prince, Chief.

    He will make...

... a great parody character if Apple decides to launch a series of "I'm an iPad, I'm an Intel" ads in the future.

Who does this lame-a** think he's "connecting with"? Do Apple's competitor's really think it's only about image? You have to have a quality product in terms of both software and hardware first. Eye-candy and aesthetics come next. The image of the company and it's key staff come next. Dressing like some kind of dated beatnik isn't going to sell crappy netablets, morons!

    Perhaps it's the lightig

The guy is trying so hard to look hip, someone should tell him that the jacket, the turtleneck, and the beret are three different shades of black. And, while we are being helpful, we should tell him about Cargo Cults, and how making the tablet look right is not enough.
This embarrassment would have never happened when Grove was around, there is something to be said for control freaks.

The comments on this post say it all. Why say something constructive when you can make fun of how someone dresses!

You all should move to the Yahoo OMG! forums and make fun of the latest celebrities on the red carpet...

    Apple has....

Shown us just what a tablet should look like, act like, and be like. So:

We are going to copy the look,
Use Windows xx cause we are cheap.
double + the power of the processor cause the software sucks so bad,
Run the think like a toaster to help heat the house in winter,
Have no apps so we will make lots of ports on the side so you can run it like a net book.

    Just a thought. :-)

    Microsoft's turn

Even Intel trying to be hip like Apple. It's about time Microsoft's Ballmer should be dress in black in order to compete in a world of fashion tech.
