Google Maps Android app adds biking directions, sharing

updated 08:20 pm EDT, Tue May 11, 2010

Users can share places via e-mail, text message

Google has updated its Maps application for Android smartphones. Version 4.2 brings several enhancements, including a new bike layer that allows users to view optimal bicycling routes. Dedicated bike routes appear as solid green lines, while bike lanes are represented by light green. Routes that are "good for biking" but lack a dedicated lane are shown as a broken green line.

Users can also now add a Navigation shortcut tho the home screen for direct access to the destination menu. The latest version allows users to share a location from any search results page or map view. Locations can be sent via text message, e-mail, Google Buzz, Facebook or Twitter.

Google Maps mobile v4.2 is now available as a free download on the Android Market.
