ATT gives clues to iPhone release via upgrades

AT&T has provided a possible clue as to the next iPhone's release date by moving up the upgrade eligibility for the iPhone. Multiple customers who bought an iPhone 3GS at or near its mid-June launch date last year have seen their qualification date for a new iPhone move up in the past day from November to June 21st. Not everyone has received the change in schedule, but the timing is almost always the same.

The timing recorded by MobileCrunch users points to Apple likely launching the new iPhone the same week, as AT&T reacted to complaints about possible high upgrade costs by shortening the upgrade period for all iPhone customers within a certain period. Apple has usually shipped the iPhone for Friday releases and could put the real availability on June 25th.

Apple was claimed in one recent rumor as having the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts reserved for June 22nd, but it has almost always saved introductions for its WWDC keynote, which this year may occur on June 7th or 8th.

    pretty typical

carriers work on a sliding scale so that those that get only the lowest plan upgrade about 21-22 months into the contract, but those that pay more get 'upgrades' quicker depending on how much they pay. as a way to encourage them to resign.

No, it isn't about how much you spent, for wouldn't the date, but default, start at 22 months vs. 15 months vs. whatever.

This is all done because the iPhone/Mac crowd are a bunch of "I need it now!" whiners who, if you recall, all cried and cried because ATT just wouldn't let them upgrade from their 1st gen iPhone to the second gen one for the subsidized price. They're just beating them to the punch so they don't have to put up with them this year.
