HP ProBook gets quad AMD processors

HP revamped its business notebooks in large fashion today with a particularly large update to its ProBook line. The 14-inch 6455b and 15.6-inch 6555b are some of the first pro systems to use AMD's new mobile Phenom II processors. They add three- and four-core options up to 2GHz and are reckoned to be about 69 percent faster than HP's earlier AMD-running business notebooks but with 24 percent more battery life.

Both of the leading systems can use mobile Athlon II and Turion II chips as well, and have the choice either of Radeon HD 4250 integrated video or dedicated Mobility Radeon HD 540v graphics. Those who prefer Intel processors can pick the 6450b and 6550b, which share the same screen sizes but dual Core i3, i5 and i7 chips and Intel's own graphics as the integrated choice. All of the larger models are due in June and will cost $779 for the AMD-based PCs and $849 for the Intel versions.

The mid-size models are tuned for a lower-cost audience but are often similar in speed. The 13.3-inch ProBook 4325s, 14-inch 4425s and 15.6-inch 4525s still have the same Athlon II, Turion II and Phenom II choices and still have Mobility Radeon HD 4250 video, albeit with a slightly slower Mobility Radeon HD 530v dedicated chip. These ship in May and start from $619.

Budget workers get two options, the 425 and 625. They too have 14- and 15.6-inch displays and a narrower choice of processors, although they can still use Phenom II chips. HP starts these at $549 and ships them in June.
