Clearwire to expand 4G WiMAX network this summer

Sprint and Clearwire announced the expansion of the availability of their 4G mobile data network in new markets on Wednesday. This will focus heavily on Florida cities such as Daytona, Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa. At the same time, the 4G service will also be launched in Kansas City, Kansas, along with Rochester and Syracuse in New York through Time Warner Cable.

Comcast, Sprint and Clear will also bring the high-speed service to Nashville, Tennessee; St. Louis, Missouri; Salt Lake City, Utah; Merced, Modesto, Stockton, and Visalia in California; Wilmington, Delaware; Grand Rapids, Michigan, Eugene, Oregon; and Yakima as well as the Tri-Cities area in Washington state.

The service on either network hinges on WiMAX and provides about 3Mbps to 6Mbps in real-world downstream speeds. Sprint in particular is rushing to implement the faster networks as the HTC Evo 4G should be ready just as the major network expansion goes live.
