ABC near launching 3G-capable iPad app

updated 03:45 pm EDT, Mon May 3, 2010

Update already submitted to Apple

ABC is reportedly ready to launch an updated version of its iPad app, according to the Business Insider. The app will allow users to stream videos across 3G networks, overcoming the Wi-Fi limitation of the current version. An ABC representative recently blamed the restriction on a "variety of business and technical considerations."

Although ABC did not provide any further details regarding the "business" factors that prevented 3G streaming, the recent report suggests TV networks have maintained different rights for content delivery via 3G and Wi-Fi. Some networks allegedly considered 3G to be a "mobile" technology, while Wi-Fi was still considered a "PC/Web streaming" system, even if both connectivity options are available on the same device.

ABC has yet to provide a time-frame for the iPad app update, which has already been submitted to Apple for approval.
