Sony gearing up pro 3D camcorder prototype

updated 09:15 am EDT, Mon May 3, 2010

Sony EX3 would merge two 1080p cams for 3D

A new scoop this weekend has shown Sony developing its own 3D pro camcorder. The EX3 would combine two of its similarly named studio cameras into a single camera that could generate stereoscopic images. Each CMOS sensor can output full-quality 1080p, 4:4:4 video over their own distinct HD-SDI outputs, the Engadget source said, or squeezed 4:2:0 MPEG-2 video to SanDisk- and Sony-made SxS cards.

The lensing system would also be unique. While it would be a proprietary design that packages two lenses into a cartridge, the optics would be extremely close at just 1.5 inches apart, producing a more convincing 3D image. Costs for the 3D-aware EX3 camera and its availability aren't known, although 3D cameras remain expensive compared to even most typical professional camcorders.
