Apple sells 1 million iPads

updated 08:45 am EDT, Mon May 3, 2010

iPad reaches 1m in half the time of iPhone

Apple today said it had officially sold over 1 million iPads as of Friday. The figure came just 28 days after the tablet first went on sale and was twice as fast as for the original iPhone, which took 74 days to reach the same milestone. Company chief Steve Jobs also said that "demand continues to exceed supply" and the company was working to expand production.

It added that over 5,000 iPad-specific apps had been published to the App Store and that owners had downloaded over 12 million apps and 1.5 million e-books from the iBookstore.

Sales of the 3G iPad weren't broken out of the separate results but could have included 300,000 units on the weekend.

The achievement may give Apple a third of Amazon's lifetime Kindle sales in just a month and could make it the most successful computer-like tablet to date. Windows-based Tablet PCs have rarely if ever had specific numbers and are often relegated to niche markets with accordingly low sales.

    Haters

There will always be skeptics. There will always be disbelievers. And there will always be Apple to prove them wrong.

    Skeptics stay skeptical...

Now they're saying that even if iPad sales have reached one million units, how long can Apple sustain sales. They're saying that in six months iPad demand will be sated and that will be the end of the iPad. The iPad is just an iFad say the skeptics. The Kindle was able to sustain almost three years of sales as a one-trick pony and supposedly three million were sold. Yet the skeptics don't think the iPad can sustain six months of sales even with a massive ecosystem, smart marketing and retail stores. It's unbelievable how hater's judgment becomes clouded.

    OK

Who here has one? Has it lived up to the hype? Has it become part of you? Be honest. I won't mod you down if it hasn't.

    just got my 3G version

    and in one word...Amazing!

The iPad is here to stay. I stand by my previous claim...in 4 years or less the ipad will obsolete the laptop.

I disagree with many reviewers that say the ipad is for content consumption rather than creation. If you have an iphone and are used to a touchscreen the keypad makes a lot of sense. I type just as fast on the ipad as I do on a physical keyboad - which is pretty darn fast. You just need to find something to prop it up a bit. This would be solved for me by an apple like folio...

    My 3G iPad

Arrived on Friday. Unbelievable. I currently own a 27" iMac in an upstairs office, a MacBook (aluminum) on a desk in our kitchen, and two iPhones. The iPad is a welcome addition to the fold. The difference for me is that it will travel with me almost everywhere I have a meeting and such, where my MacBook wouldn't. I'm planning on using it as my notepad from now on.

When they advertised touching the internet and it sounded kind of silly…it's not, it is incredible!

p.s. my four-year-old sat and played with it for about an hour yesterday, I didn't show him a thing.
