Pro photographer hints at Canon EOS 5D Mark III in 2011

updated 02:40 pm EDT, Mon May 3, 2010

Canon 3rd-gen 5D would come next year

Well-known pro photographer Vincent LaForet during a recent online workshop hinted that Canon is developing a third generation of the EOS 5D. He didn't say what it would involve but implied it would be ready sometime next year. Canon would also be touching on issues with the mini HDMI port on all of its DSLRs, LaForet added.

The camera would have to be full-frame, but what else would be included is still a mystery. It would likely inherit some or all of the extremely high light sensitivity of the 1D Mark IV but with a higher-resolution sensor and features that have shown up only in later cameras, such as the built-in level and support for wireless flash sync.

The 5D Mark II is one of Canon's most popular high-end DSLRs in recent memory and may face stiffer competition from a Nikon D700 sequel as soon as this year.

Outside of the new camera, replacements are believed due for the PowerShot SX20 ultrazoom compact, which would have a new design that uses lithium-ion batteries, and a sequel to the Speedlite 580EX II external flash. A waterproof point-and-shoot, possibly a sequel to the D10, may also join the rumored EOS 60D at or near the ship date.
