Steam for Mac gets final launch date

Valve Software tonight sent a quick note that Steam for the Mac will officially launch May 12th. The news comes shortly after the start of a beta but puts the release about a month later than its original April target. Which games would launch, and the final system requirements, weren't publicly mentioned.

When finished, Steam will offer virtually all the functionality of its Windows equivalent, including Steam Cloud to transfer settings and other details between computers, the ability to shop from Valve's online store, and a WebKit-based internal web browser. Those who already own Windows versions of the games on Steam will have the option of download them for free for the Mac. Initial games will revolve around Valve's own Source engine, including Counter-Strike: Source, the Half-Life 2 episodes, theLeft 4 Dead series, Portal and Team Fortress 2.
