LG scraps Atom-based phone

LG dashed hopes in an unusual fashion today by claiming the GW990 was just a concept device. Although it was scheduld for the fall at CES, the electronics giant now claims that it was never going to be a production device and won't be made. The apparent change of heart hasn't been explained.

The GW990 was held up by Intel as the first production Atom-based phone and would have used a version of Moorestown, a system-on-a-chip version small and efficient enough to run properly in a smartphone-sized device. It would have also had one of the largest phone screens ever with a 4.8-inch, 1024x480 touch display and was to be the first phone running MeeGo, a new mobile OS based on a hybrid of Intel's Moblin Linux and Nokia's Maemo.

Intel hasn't commented on the reduction of the GW990 to concept status; LG also hasn't said whether an alternative to the phone would ship in a similar timeframe or at all. [via Phone Arena]
