Fusion Garage to ship JooJoo tablet globally

Fusion Garage, makers of the JooJoo tablet admitted on Tuesday that it had made a few mistakes in bringing its first and only product to market. The company acknowledged its product is far from an iPad killer, as some bloggers have stated. The company also blamed itself for its missed delivery dates and revised user interface that wasn't satisfactory.

The company promises the latter will soon be fixed, and the device will have the ability to play full screen HD videos.Fusion Garage believes it is far from death and can be successful simply because it isn't Apple, as that company's business model and closed platform are not what everybody prefers.

At the same time, the device has been made available to order from Canada and Europe in addition to the US, with more countries being added soon.

The JooJoo tablet sports a 12.1-inch touchscreen with a 1366x768 resolution and has an NVIDIA Ion chip that can accelerate 1080p video. The main CPU is a 1.6GHz Intel Atom. There is just 4GB of internal space and a focus on web content with Flash. It costs $499.

    The company can be successful because it isn't

    Apple? These people are arrogant and very insulting. This company brought an unfinished product to the consumer market and they have the nerve to pan Apple's closed platform strategy. I'm really interested in seeing this company's consumer base six months from now even after they get their problems straightened out. I don't believe they are going to sell many of these tablets at all. How are users going to store 1080p movies on the JooJoo with such a small amount of memory?

    Ok - let's look

    Hey, Joo Joo! Where is your SDK? Oh, yeah, wait, you don't need an SDK because YOU DON'T HAVE A PLATFORM!!! You have a big 'ol browser!

    I love how, when people (read that as manufacturers et all) are threatened by Apple they immediately pull up the "It's a close system, and thereby inferior..." card. And here, consequently, is where people show (blatantly) their ignorance.

    Apple offers an SDK. They show everyone who cares to know how to build for their platform. Following those guidelines, USING OPEN STANDARDS, anyone can build an app for this platform. How is that closed? Oh, yeah, cause they aren't just letting people run amuck with the OS... that's right... and that is a bad thing I guess??? WHATTTT???? It is because of this VERY PRINCIPLE that everything Apple touches WORKS.

    Windows is a closed OS... nobody cares or says anything about it... because they are just too big.

    Let's take a look at Android. Ok, there, we looked. Big deal. As far as I am concerned, they have taken what they liked of the iPhone OS and improved upon it using (here we go) Open Source Software... so... I guess that makes them awesome.... thing is they are really only prevalent among IT Geeks (like me) so, how does that make them better again? I gave an iPhone to my 6-year-old niece and she was using it in like 1 minute... the next day I gave her an Android phone and she started crying because she "...couldn't make it work"... so.. proof is in the pudding I say.

    I think manufacturers need to take a look (like Microsoft, funny enough) and come up with something NEW-of their own. Stop trying to do things the same way as Apple. Just make something new and take the lumps that come with it if it isn't so great and LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE. Other manufacturers should put as much R&D into their inventions as Apple does. There really is no magic... it's just really good business principles. Why is this so hard for people to understand?

    Poor JooJoo, though, only 96 customers I heard. Of course, I am sure they are doing everything they can to better their offering. It's just too bad that they had such a crappola start. That is hard to recover from.

    Open addiction

    I don't quite get the market here - the people who would choose to buy something because it was an open platform - and there is a market of computer hobbyists who want iPad/iPhone class hardware to play around with - are largely the same group who dislike Flash.

    Alternatively, you've got the consumer market - who might go for a cheaper iPad that 'runs all the web' (meaning Flash, Java, ActiveX, etc) but that market doesn't care about open/closed platform politics.

    Think how far Apple got with 'Think Different', and how their fortunes changed when they went back to selling products, rather than a political idea. (Basically, with the latter you first have to persuade the customer they are wrong, and then sell them a product on top).

    well, one good thing

    At the very least I admire their lack of false bravado for not calling themselves yet another "iPad Killer."

    Man, I'd love to know what the truth behind how this whole thing came together and then fell apart is. King Weasel Arrington certainly won't ever come clean about it.

    open vs closed

    I can't understand how a company with a device that has no real, visible OS, with no ability to store data of any kind, and no SDK for apps, can accuse another of being closed.

    There's just nothing here

    If you brought this to market last year AND at a price of $300 JooJoo might have at least gotten a foothold.

    Last year I would have considered buying one of these for my Mom who pretty much just used, facebook, email, and light web browsing. Christmas came and she got a MacBook instead.

    Last year, when it was still a CrunchPad and the target price was $300 I could see kicking one of these around the house in the living room.

    Today, why in the world would you buy a JooJoo for $500 when you can get an iPad for the same amount of money. I'm sorry, flash just doesn't make up the difference. I'm mean lets be clear, if point for point the JooJoo matched the iPad and had a couple of extra features then maybe (big maybe) they could justify the price, but that's simply not the case - not even close.

    And lets not forget the Android tablets coming out. Fusion Garage - you totally missed your window.

    My bet is this thing will hobble along till after Christmas, then the investors will pull the plug when they see the xmas sales figures.

    International Sales?

    Why with International sales, they could sell HUNDREDS of these JooJoo tablets. Maybe even THOUSANDS!

    The JooJoo has Flash 10.1, but it runs so poorly that even Adobe has disowned them. Using Flash gives you a 2 1/2 hour battery life and it is far, far from smooth animation with the resulting being described as a slide show. And, as a bonus, Flash tends to crash the platform.

    Conspiracy theory? How about Apple is the company behind the JooJoo. After all, the JooJoo has shown that Flash is everything Apple said it would be on a tablet computer. And, that people don't want Flash.
